In
2002 China formed 30 million DVD players that more than 70% of the
world production. China pays US$20 for per player in license
charges, to the patent holders of the DVD player technology like
Sony, Philips, Toshiba and AOL Time Warner etc, and for MPEG-2
licenses. To avoid these charges, China has organized the EVD
standard as a future successor of DVD and since 2004 EVD players
